William T. Hageboeck, age 94 of 437 Hutchinson Avenue, Iowa City died Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the Crestview Care Center in West Branch.

Memorial Services will be held at 3p.m, Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Pau Akin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hageboeck Family Chair of the University of Minnesota’s Children Cancer Research Fund, @ 4930 West 77th. Street, Suite 364, Minneapolis, MN 55435. The Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Mr. Hageboeck’s services and his family.

William T. Hageboeck was born March 15, 1907 in Lake Park, Iowa, the son of William Henry and Amy Thompson Hageboeck. He graduated from Lake Park High School in 1924, received his BA degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1928. William became business manager of the Daily Iowan, captain of the University rifle team, and a member of ODK, Sigma Chi and Sigma Delta Chi as a student. Following his graduation, he continued with the University as assistant general manager of student publications until 1936. After a short period with the advertising and promotion department of the Des Moines Register and Tribune, he returned to Iowa City as advertising manager of the Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1937. In 1939 he became general manager, becoming president and publisher in 1940, a position he held until his retirement in 1962.

While publisher of the Press-Citizen, he was president of the state Iowa Daily Press Association, president of Kiwanis, head of the Iowa City Quarterback Club, and was active for many years in the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hageboeck was a recipient of the Rotary Club’s award for community service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the University of Iowa Alumni Director’s Club, and the President’s Club. In 1993 he and his wife, Eleanor received the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Alumni Association. INi1999 he was inducted into the University of Iowa School of Journalism & Mass Communications Hall of Fame.

His family includes his wife of seventy-one years, Eleanor G. Hageboeck; son and his wife, Norm and Diana Hageboeck of Minneapolis, MN; daughter and her husband, Anne and Richard Higgins of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.

Mr. Hageboeck was preceded in death by a son Fredrich in 1978, and his granddaughter, Katie Hageboeck in 1979.
