Paul L. Heitzman, age 83 of 1520 Tracy Lane, Iowa City died Thursday at his home following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 1, 2002 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills with the Reverend Louis Leonhardt officiating. Burial with Military honors provided by the VFW of Riverside will be at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery near Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Sunday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation in Iowa City, and after 9am until service time at the church in Hills. Memorial donations can be made to the American Lung Association or Iowa City Hospice.

Mr. Heitzman was born December 29, 1918 in Riverside, Iowa the son of Robert and Irma (Critz) Heitzman. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII serving from 1941 until 1943. In 1944 he married Virginia Kern. The couple and their family lived in Hills during this time. Virginia died in 1963. He later married Edna Ruppert in 1976. He and Edna have made their home in Iowa City for a number of years now. Paul worked as a steamfitter in this area for many years, and an estimator for AAA Mechanical Contractors of Iowa City until his retirement.

Paul was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills, Eagles Club 695, 55 year member of Plumbers Pipefitters Local 125 of Cedar Rapids, and the Catholic Order of Foresters in Riverside.

His family includes his wife, Edna; daughter and her husband, Margaret and Dennis Hamilton of Hills; sons, Thomas Heitzman of Hills, Richard and his wife, Becky Heitzman of Hills, and William and Nancy Heitzman of Hills; 7 grandchildren, Tom and Jay Hamilton, Angie, Scott, Zach, Katie, and Dan Heitzman; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Collin Hamilton; two sisters, Helen Unferth of Silvis, IL, and Gertrude Beringhele of Los Angeles, CA.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia, and two sisters.
