Helen Elizabeth Hempstead, 97, of 501 Pioneer Road, Lone Tree, Iowa died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Lone Tree Care Center following a short illness.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June, 22, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, Iowa with Reverend Bruce Fischer officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established with the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City. Mrs. Hempstead wishes were to be cremated.

Mrs. Hempstead was born on September 12, 1904 in Chadron, Nebraska the daughter of Clint Arthur and Olive Millye Pickett Russell. She graduated from Sibley High School in Sibley, Iowa and attended Colorado College in Colorado Spring, Colorado and University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Helen married Donald L. Hempstead on March 23, 1929 in Newton, Iowa. She was the Office Manager for Booth Brothers Engineering Company in Davenport, Iowa until her retirement in 1971. Helen and Don lived in Davenport, Iowa from 1944 to 1977 and then moved to Iowa City, Iowa. She was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City, Iowa, American Association of University Women, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and Questers International.

Mrs. Hempstead’s family includes, her daughter, Sara J. and her husband, Kenneth L. Putney of Iowa City, Iowa, her daughter-in-law, Judith Hempstead of Mobile, Alabama, her three grandchildren, Kevin L. and his wife, Cathy Putney of Tomball, Texas, Lynn E. Putney of Washington, D.C., Ann and her husband, Richard Meister of Hartford, Michigan, her four great grandchildren, Maclaine Putney, Curran Putney both of Tomball, Texas, Richard Meister II of Hartford, Michigan, Amy Meister of Hartford, Michigan, her special niece, Sydney and her husband, Robert Jensen of Ardenhills, Minnesota, her brother-in-law, Jean Hempstead of Ames, Iowa, her two sisters-in-law, Betty Ernst of Grinnell, Iowa and Bea Hempstead of Topeka, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don in 1987, son, Russell in 1999, her sister, Jeanne Reusch in 1998.
