Ferne N. Hirt, age 96 of 1500 1st Avenue north, Coralville, died Friday, April 26, 2002 at the Hawthorne Inn in Coralville following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at the Hawthorne Inn in Coralville, with her son-in-law, Reverend Ray Holder officiating. Ferne’s wishes were to have her taken to the University Of Iowa Department Of Anatomy for medical research following her death. In Lieu of Flowers memorial donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice, Johnson County Senior Center, or Hawthorne Inn. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Ferne’s services and her family.

Ferne was born January 20, 1906 in Lake Mills, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Clara (Charlson) Nyhus. She graduated from the State University of Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education. She started her teaching career in a one room school house in Mason City, having taught school in North Liberty, and for many years teaching at Coralville Central retiring in 1970. She married DeVere Hirt on January 9, 1932 in Lake Mills at West Prairie Lutheran Church. She was a very active member in the Lutheran Church, also a resident of Coralville for over fifty years.

Her family includes a daughter, Helen Holder and her husband, Reverend Ray Holder of Redmond, OR; a son and his wife, Frank and Pat Hirt of Akron, OH; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, sisters, Hazel Ingebretson of Hannibal, MO, and Jane Lopez of Santa Barbara, CA; a brother, Vernon Nyhus of Mason City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lila Nyhus of Mason City and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Edward, infant son Roger, brothers Harry and Richard, and sister Mavis.
