John Robert Horning, age 67, of 1220 Louise Street, Iowa City died Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a sudden illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 30, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend David Michael Nolte officiating. There will be a time for family and friends to gather at the funeral home for visitation from 4 to 6pm Thursday. In Lieu of Flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Washington County Animal Shelter. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for John’s services and his family.

John was born December 31, 1934 in Muscatine, Iowa the son of John and Hazel (Phillips) Horning. He graduated from Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, IL, and later attended the University of Iowa.

John married Eleanore L. “Ellie” Nolte on September 2, 1956 in Hampton, Iowa. For over twenty-five years, he worked for the Department of Public Safety at the University of Iowa retiring as a sergeant in 1994. Prior to this, he worked at Cook’s Paint and Varnish in Iowa City for a number of years.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Lions Club, Johnson County Republican Party, and AFSCME local 12. He loved animals, rescuing many; enjoyed playing golf, and being with his family and friends.

His family includes his wife, Ellie; sons; Andrew and his wife, Lisa Horning of Solon, Paul Horning of North Liberty, and Michael and his wife, Emily Horning of Reston, Virginia; daughters, Sarah Horning of Iowa City, and Catherine Horning of St. Louis; two grandchildren, Drew and Colin Horning of Solon; and his beloved companion, Beau.
