Clifford E. Howe, age 76, of 152 Bowling Green Place, Iowa City died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from the long term effects of diabetes.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2002 at the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 1pm Friday until services at the Church. Memorial donations can be made in his memory to National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Johnson County, or Chatham Oaks Care Facility, or the American Diabetes Association. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services are caring for Clifford’s family and his services.

Professor Howe was the long-time chairman of the Division of Special Education and School Psychology at the University of Iowa before his retirement in 1988. Prior to that, he was the supervisor of Special Education for the Long Beach Unified School District in Long Beach, California. He was the author of a book and thirty journal articles.

He was born March 28, 1926 in a rural area near Prescott, Iowa in Adams County, the son of Lester and Florence (Leigh) Howe. He attended a rural school through the eighth grade, graduating from Creston High School in 1943. He married Ethel Hansen on July 31, 1949 in Creston, Iowa.After service in the U.S. Army, he earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D degrees from the University of Iowa. He also took graduate work from Drake University and Long Beach State College.

Clifford was a board member of Chatham Oaks Residential Care Facility.

His family includes his wife, Ethel; two daughters, Sheryl of Denver, CO, and Nancy of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one younger brother.
