Ellen Regina “Nelle” Hoyt age 102 of Oxford, died on Tuesday, May 7 at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Coralville following a brief illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery also in Oxford. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:30 at the Gay and Ciha Oxford Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Oxford.

Nelle was born on February 11, 1900 in Oxford the daughter of James and Margaret Volk Barry. She was a graduate of Oxford High School and attended Ottumwa Heights College. She married Ambrose Hoyt on June 24, 1924 and taught in the Oxford School system for 31 years. Nelle also worked as a housekeeper at the Alamo Hotel for seventeen years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, the Alter and Rosary Society, National Catholic Order of Foresters, the American Legion Auxiliary and retired Teachers Association.

Her family includes two sons James and wife Doris of Oxford; Donald and wife Billie Jeanne Hoyt of Marion; a daughter Margaret and husband David Hagan of Chandler, Arizona; twelve grandsons, six granddaughters, thirty three great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

Her parents, husband Ambrose, son William, three sisters, four brothers; one great grandson preceded her in death.
