Philip G. Hubbard, age 80 former University of Iowa vice president and professor died Thursday, January 10, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Private family service s will be held Monday, with burial at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Public Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Dr. Hubbard’s services.

Dr. Hubbard was born March 4, 1921 in Macon, Missouri, the son of Philip A. and Rose Bell (Wallace) Hubbard. Enrolled at the University of Iowa in 1940, later receiving his bachelor’s degree. In 1946 he graduated with honors with a degree in Electrical engineering. He married Wynonna G. Griffin May 3, 1943 just before enlisting in the U.S. Army. In 1946 he began his career with the University of Iowa in the Institute of Hydraulic Research in teaching and research. He earned his master’s degree in mechanics in 1949. He founded Hubbard Instrument Company in 1951 in Iowa City. Earned his doctorate in engineering in 1954 and was named assistant professor of mechanics and hydraulics in College of Engineering, later in 1956 he was named associate professor. In 1959 he was named professor, the first black professor at University of Iowa. In 1965 he was named dean of academic affairs, becoming the first black person named to deanship at UI. Also given the title of vice president for student services in 1970. Dr. Hubbard worked as research engineer in the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research from 1946 to 1966 and professor of mechanical engineering from 1954 until his retirement in 1991. The Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award was established in 1981 to honor UI students. He published numerous books and articles throughout his career. Last year he received the first ever Lifetime Achievement award from the Iowa City Human Rights Commission.

His family includes, four sons and their wives, Philip G. Hubbard and Susan of Seattle, WA, Michael Hubbard and Carol Torres of Chapel Hill, NC, Richard Hubbard and Alaka Wali of Evanston, IL, and Peter Hubbard and Mary of Iowa City; his daughter and her husband, Christine and James Walters of Iowa City; ten grandchildren, Anthony Hubbard, Monica Hubbard, Peter Torres, Sarah Hubbard, Shanti Hubbard, Eric Hubbard, Robert Hubbard, Neil Hubbard, Katherine Hubbard, and Matthew Walters.

His parents, wife, Wynonna on March 3, 1990, and four brothers preceded him in death.
