Everett Hunzelman, 84, of 1456 Grand Avenue, University Heights, Iowa died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Coralville, Iowa following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, Iowa with Reverend Dick Schafbuch officiating. Burial will be at Genoa Bluffs Cemetery near Ladora, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, Iowa with a Masonic Service at 4 p.m. A memorial fund has been established with the Iowa City Masonic Foundation for the Scholarship Program.

Mr. Hunzelman was born on September 24, 1917 in Ladora, Iowa the son of Elsie Hunzelman. He graduated from Ladora High School. He immediately started in the carpentry profession, a profession he remained in for his entire life. Everett married Muriel Robinson on August 6, 1938 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married for over 61 years. He owned and operated his own construction business, specializing in home construction for twenty five years in Ladora, Iowa. They moved to Iowa City in 1963. He was employed with Frantz Construction in Iowa City, until his retirement in 1983. Everett was instrumental in organizing the Holzfest WoodFest Festival in Main Amana.

Everett was an accomplished woodworker and loved the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Everett’s family includes, his son Russ and his wife, Eunice Hunzelman of Wilton, Iowa; his daughter, Kolene and her husband, Jim Fleming of Burlington, Iowa; his five grandchildren, Nick and his wife, Renee Hunzelman, Tammy and her husband, Tim McClimon, Brad and his wife, Denise Fleming, David and his wife, Timi Hunzelman, Todd and his wife, Sandy Fleming; eleven great-grandchildren; his three sisters-in-law, Kay Bell, Donna and her husband George Burrell and Lois York. Included in his family are several nieces and nephews.

Everett was preceded in death by his mother, his wife, Muriel, on July 19, 2000 and his sister, Mae Fields.
