Helen Isabelle Hyde, age 90 formerly of Shellsburg, died Friday, March 1, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Private family services will be held today at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Helen was born September 5, 1911 in Shellsburg, the daughter of William A. and Cora Mae (Dickinson) Kibbie. She graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids and attended Hamilton Business College. On May 16, 1936 she married John G. Hyde in Shellsburg. For many years the couple owned and operated a farm implement dealership, Hyde Implement in Shellsburg, and later the Shellsburg Hardware Store. John and Helen moved to Iowa City in 1986 to be closer to their family. John died November 10, 1987.

She was a member of the Grace Trinity Church in Shellsburg, Shellsburg O.E.S., Member of the Happy 20 Club of Shellsburg, and former member of the Rebekah lodge there. Her families roots go deep in the Shellsburg area, many of the founding fathers of the community were generations of her family from years past. Helen will be remembered for her very loving handiwork, from quilting, crotcheting, needlepoint and other gifts she made, and giving away to so many family, friends and total strangers, here and abroad. Her generosity will be remembered.

Her family includes two sons and their wives, Richard and Judy Hyde of Chetek, Wisc., and William P. and Garlinda Hyde missionaries in the Philippines; daughter and her husband, Barbara and Richard Brooker of Iowa City; grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Salman Elbedour, John and his wife, Laura Hyde, Jeffrey and his wife, Teresa Hyde, Jason Hyde, Scott and his wife, Jane Brooker, Shelley and her husband, Glenn Ansiel, Sharie and her husband, Jeff Bolender, Timothy Hyde and Steven and his wife, Noit Hyde; great grandchildren, Judson and Matthew Brooker, Heidi, Hillary, and Thomas Ansiel, Daniel, Molly and Isabel Bolender, Leena and Annisa Elbedour, and Lukas Hyde; two sisters, Dorothea Thousand, and Lucille Walker of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Raymond Kibbie.
