Michael Dean Jones, age 48 of 820 Club House Road, North Liberty, died suddenly Friday, June 14, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Congregational Church of Christ Church in Iowa City with the Reverend John W. McKinstry of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established in Michael’s memory. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services of Iowa City are caring for Michael’s family and his services.

Michael was born June 21, 1953 in Iowa City, the son of Dean and Ellen (Thompson) Jones. He attended Iowa City schools, graduating from Iowa City City High School in 1972 and in 1977 from the University of Iowa. During the Vietnam War Michael was very vocal as a conscientious objector to this conflict. From 1980 to 1985 he owned and operated Michael’s Cheese and Gourmet in the Old Capital Mall in Iowa City, he later worked for the Osco’s Drug Stores in Iowa City. Michael married Lisa A. Tutt on July 21, 1989 in Iowa City. For a period of time from 1994 to 2001 he and his wife, Lisa owned a household cleaning service. In 1997 he joined Better Millstone, an international non-profit child advocacy organization, he has served as assistant executive director and treasurer.

Michael was an active member of the First Christian Church of Iowa City, past chairman on the board of the Melrose Day Care Center, member of a number of professional and law enforcement organizations caring for the welfare of our nations children; and one of the most avid Iowa Hawkeye football fans, having not missed a home game for over thirty-five years.

His family includes, his wife, Lisa; son, Scott Van Oss of North Liberty; parents, Dean and Ellen Jones of North Liberty, brothers, Charles and his wife, Bev Jones of St. Paul, MN, and Jerry Jones of North Liberty and his sons, Jay, Jon and Jeff Jones;an Aunt, Doris King of North Liberty; Lisa’s family, her parents, Glenn and Rosemary Tutt of Laurens, IA; brother and his wife, David and Fran Tutt of Spencer, and their daughter, Sarah; and a sister and her husband, Lori and Dan Ring of Marshalltown, and their children, Nicole and her husband, Andy Weston, and Christopher Ring; a niece and her husband, Melissa and Jason Meyer of Twin Lakes, Ia; and other members of Michael’s family.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandmother, Gladys Thompson, Lisa’s sister and her husband, Linda and Art Harriman.

To all those that knew Michael, you knew a quiet, gentle giant, whose passion, determinination, and motivation glowed in everything he believed in, from the love for his family, friends and those Hawks, to the many children that he tried to protect and help, this was Mike.
