Mable J. Krofta, age 101 of 429 South Governor Street, Iowa City died Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Lantern Park Nursing Rehab Center in Coralville following an extended illness.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City or Iowa Lions Eye Bank Program through the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Mable’s services and her family.

Mable was born May 20, 1900 in Iowa City the oldest daughter of Joseph and Anna Forwald Krofta. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1918. Following high school she attended the old Irish College of Business and later became a court reporter and public stenographer. She also worked in several real estate and law offices. Her father owned a butcher shop in the old downtown area and she was a niece of Chic Forwald. Her mother worked for the university for many years. As a public stenographer Mable had an office in the Schneider building on College Street. She retired in 1975, but remained active in her church, Gloria Dei Lutheran and community affairs throughout the remainder of her life.

Her family includes a sister, Mrs. Alice Griffin of Mapleton, Iowa, three nieces, Mrs. Patricia (Fred) Ress of Omaha, NE, Mrs. Mary Ann (Jose) Garcia of Shippenville, PA, and Mrs. Phyllis (Al) Mattei of Wheatridge, CO; four grand-nephews, three grand-nieces, three-great-grand nephews and two great-grand nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers and a nephew..
