Martha M. Loan 1904-2002

Martha M. Loan, age 98 formerly of 925 Deforest Street, Iowa City died at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Tim Malek of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 6pm Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Martha was born March 9, 1904 in Nels, OK, the daughter of Herman and Mary (Schopff) Heldt. Their family moved to South Dakota three years after her birth. She attended german and public schools in Wentworth, South Dakota. On September 16, 1922 she married Charles Alden Loan in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple farmed in Iowa until her husband’s death in 1961. She then started working at the University of Iowa Hospital School for handicapped children as house mother in nursing for over 16 years. After having to retire from the university at the age of 70, she then worked as a proof reader for ACT in Iowa City for six years. In 1983 she moved to Arizona until returning to Iowa City in the fall of 1999.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City and also Wentworth, SD, and Victory Lutheran Church while living in Arizona, a sixty-three year member of the Rebekah Lodge #416 of Iowa City where she was Past Noble Grand, and a member of the Eagles Lodge #695.

Her family includes her daughter, Gwen Burnett of Lone Tree; sons, Darrell A. Loan of Cedar Rapids, and Ronald and his wife, Rose Ann Loan of Oxford, 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Bradfeldt of Sioux Falls, SD, and Eleanor Dahl of Sioux Falls, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Elsie Wakeman, Brother Walter Heldt, and son-in-law, Virgil Burnett.
