Edward Bradley MacLean, age 97 of 77 Olive Court, Iowa City died Thursday, January 3, 2002 of a brief illness.

His wisdom and wit, his pessimism and optimism, his idealism and passion will be missed but remembered by those who knew him.

Ed was born in Chicago and attended University of Chicago Laboratory School where his lifelong interests in writing, philosophy, and nature were cultivated. He went to Hollywood to write for the movie studios, including Selznick, but found them too commmercial. He also worked as a stand-in andextra. In Hollywood he met Mary Louise Leake, an artist who became his wife and partner til her death in l997. They lived in Colorado, Florida, and in Oklahoma where they worked with Indians in an arts and crafts program. They also lived in Exira, Iowa and Michigan. Ed was a writer, housepainter and Boy Scout leader while Mary taught art. They moved to Iowa City in 1964. Ed wrote for and supported the anti-war, environmental and Native American movements. He was a passionate essayist and writer of fiction, and a dedicated gardener. He is survived by 3 sons, Shian, Wakean, and Brant, 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many friends.
