M. Alice Sahs 1906-2001

M. Alice Sahs, mother of Rochester resident, Mary Ingle, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence after a short illness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City, with the Reverend Bruce Fischer officiating. Inurnment will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Services of Iowa City is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Fund of the Congregational United Church of Christ at 30 N. Clinton Street, Iowa City, Iowa, 52245.

Mrs. Sahs was born March 5, 1906, in Iowa City, the daughter of William James and Margaret Emma (Rowland) Weeber. She was a 1922 graduate of Iowa City High School and a 1927 graduate of the State University of Iowa, with a major in physical education and dance. She taught physical education in public schools in Ankeny, Ia. and Minneapolis, Mn..

She married Dr. Adolph L. Sahs on February 8, 1936, in Iowa City. They lived in Boston, Ma. and New Haven, Ct. for one year, and then spent the rest of their lives in Iowa City, where she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Sahs was a Charter Member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the American Academy of Neurology and served as President from 1959 – 1961. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was affiliated with Kappa Delta Sorority, where she received recognition in the White Rose Circle for her 50-year membership. She was also a lifetime member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, and belonged to the Presidents Club of the University of Iowa, University Club, the UI Alumni Association, and the Hills Bank Friends Club.

In college, she studied piano and sang in the University Glee Club and Chorus. She was a member of the University Interpretative Dance Group, the Octave Thanet Literary Society, the Hawkeye Staff, WAA, and YWCA.

Her family includes, three daughters, Margaret Erikson and her husband, John of Oberlin, Oh. Carolyn Corson of Iowa City, and Mary Ingle and her husband, Jim of Rochester, Mn.; seven grandchildren, Kristin Erikson Cherry, Erik Erikson, Carl Erikson, Nathan Corson, Seth Corson, Will Ingle, Peter Ingle; one great-granddaughter, Destiny Cherry; one brother, Keith Weeber of Rock Island, Il..

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sahs in December 1986, and a brother, Chase Weeber.
