Donald L. Sanderson, age 90 of Spencer, father of Dale Sanderson of Iowa City died at his son’s home in Iowa City Thursday, August 29, 2002 following a long illness. A memorial fund has been established in Donald’s memory. Funeral services are pending at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer, Iowa. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service cared for the local arrangements for the Sanderson family.

Mr. Sanderson was born October 13, 1912 in Moneta, Iowa the son of Blanche and Louis Sanderson. At an early age he moved to Des Moines where he attended elementary school. The family then moved to Houston, Texas, where he graduated from Regan High School. They returned to Iowa and Don began farming in Webb. He married Leah F. Johnson on June 27, 1943. They made their home on the farm until retiring to Spencer.

Don served on the first ASC Committee as corn sealer. He was the Garfield Township Clerk for a number of years. He also served on the school board and on the church board. Don was helpful with local 4-H for many years. In later years he enjoyed the Golden Kiwanis Club and the Senior Center in Spencer.

His family includes his wife, Leah of Spencer; sons, George Sanderson and his friend, Claudia Simon of Webb, James Sanderson and his wife, Arlene of Waterloo and Dale Sanderson of Iowa City; grandchildren, Nathan and Patrick Sanderson, and Shelly Keating all of Iowa City, Jill Sanderson of Des Moines, Chris Ewald of LaPorte City, Kathy Madsen of Sioux Rapids, and Carrie Calhoun of Spencer; and many great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Doris Prentice, and duaghter-in-law, Jan Sanderson.
