Betty McHargue Schmidt

Betty McHargue Schmidt, age 57, died quietly in her sleep on Monday April 1, 2002, at the Washington Care Center in Washington, IA. Formerly of Iowa City, she had suffered from progressive dementia since 1985. Local funeral services will be held in Iowa City on Friday April 5, 2002, at Gay and Ciha Funeral Home. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00, with a short service at 8:00. Funeral Services will also be held the following week in Mt. Vernon, Ky., at Dowell-Martin Funeral Home, with burial at Elm Wood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Betty was born October 26, 1944, in Beria, Kentucky, the daughter of James Ray McHargue and Recca Parsons McHargue. She graduated from Valley High School and received a BS in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. She taught in Lafayette, Indiana, Richardsville, Kentucky, and Mason, Michigan. She also later worked as a fashion model in the Washington, DC, area. Betty married Frank Schmidt on August 29, 1966 in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. They moved to Iowa City in the Fall of 1985 from Virginia.

Betty was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved fashion, fashion modeling, and all forms of modern dance.

She is survived by her former husband Frank Schmidt, who has served as her guardian and conservator since 1989, two daughters, Lisa Schmidt of Iowa City, and Stefanie Schmidt of Elverson, Pa., and her mother Recca Parsons McBee of Nancy, Ky. Her father died earlier.
