Robert L. Stewart, 80, of 210 Ridgeview Avenue, Iowa City, died on Monday, December 3, 2001 at Mercy Hospital, of congestive heart failure.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, Iowa with Rev. Kenneth Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City with Military rites provided by the Coralville American Legion Walter Johnson Post #721, assisted by other local military organizations. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Gay & Ciha Funeral Service, Iowa City. The Masonic Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Mercy Foundation Cardiac Rehab Fund.

Mr. Stewart was born on May 11, 1921, in Marion, Indiana the son of Robert and Hazel Drukemiller Stewart. He was a 1939 graduate of Libby High School in Toledo, Ohio. While attending Libby High School, he was the highest scoring basketball player during the 1938-39 season. He attended Ohio University and the University of Toledo. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps aboard the aircraft carrier Essex. He was engaged in several naval actions in the South Pacific.

He married Laura Pauline Bailey of Ridgeway, Ohio on January 15, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio. The couple lived in Toledo where he was employed by Owens Brush Company. He spent two years in Atlanta, Georgia in sales for the southeastern area and six years in the midwestern area before moving to Iowa City to become the Sales Promotional and Training Manager. He retired in December 1985 after 43 years of service.

Mr. Stewart was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge Toledo, before transferring to Iowa City; the Scottish Rite, Elks Club, and the Iowa City Noon Optimist Club.

His family includes his wife of 53 years, Laura; a daughter Lisa Ann Lynes and husband Erick of Iowa City, a son Robert Lon and his wife Rachelle of North Liberty, one grandson, Victor Bruno of Iowa City, and one sister, Oleen Amsden and her husband Donald of Toledo, Ohio. He leaves behind nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends from Toledo, Ohio and Iowa City.

His parents preceded him in death.
