Abbie A. (Fauser) Stolfus, age 80 of 816 Caroline Avenue, Iowa City, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an apparent heart attack at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend C. Dendy Garrett officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Friday at the funeral home, where a memorial fund has been established in her memory. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Abbie’s services and her family.

She was born April 15, 1922 in Urbana, Iowa the daughter of Paul L. and Helen N. (Wilbur) Fauser. Abbie graduated from Oelwein High School in 1939. During the Second World War she worked in Oelwein for the war effort packing parachutes. She married Walter R. “Wally” Stolfus February 4, 1941 in Strawberry Point, Iowa. While living in Oelwein, she worked for Spurgeons, and the White Spot Café. Because of her husband’s work their family moved to various towns in Iowa, in Chariton, she worked for the Iowa Southern Utilities Company, in Charles City she worked for both a local bank and the school system, the family moved to Centerville, and in 1963 moved to Iowa City. In Iowa City she began a career in the City Clerk’s office spanning over eighteen years, beginning in 1964 in the office, becoming deputy clerk in 1968, and in September of 1970 she became City Clerk of Iowa City, the first female in this position, working until her retirement in December of 1982.

To those that knew her and came in contact with her in the clerk’s office they knew her as being very professional, courteous, knowledgeable, taking much pride in what she did, and in Iowa City. She loved her work, enjoyed traveling with her family, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, and sharing lunch breaks with her son in her home for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City and Pilot Club International.

Her family includes her son and his wife, Jon and Beverly Stolfus of Solon; daughter-in-law, Marlene Stolfus of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Alisa and her husband, Keith Beach, Michelle and her husband, Jim Christensen, Alan and his wife, Erin Stolfus, Kristina Arnold, Johana and her husband, Dave Kutcher, and Hans Stolfus; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Drew Beach, Tristram and Luke Christensen, and Isaak Arnold; two brothers and their wives, Don and Dorothy Fauser of Elgin, Iowa and Bud and Bev Fauser of Monks Corner, SC.

Abbie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wally in August of 1981 and Son, Wally Alan Stolfus in June of 2000.
