Constance “Connie” R. Tappan, age 69 of 3452 Hwy. 1 S.W., Iowa City died suddenly Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 12, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial at the Welsh Cemetery near Sharon Center. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 4 to 8pm Friday and Saturday after 9am until services. Memorial donations can be made to the Welsh Congregational Church, Sharon Center, Iowa.

Connie was born June 18, 1932 on the family farm southwest of Iowa City, the daughter of Carl and Rose (Bayer) Hastings. She graduated with honors from Iowa City City High School in 1950, and with honors from the University of Iowa with a Journalism Degree in 1954. On December 10, 1954 she married Sheldon Tappan in Anamosa. The couple lived on the family farm, now a century farm. Sheldon died April 6, 1976. She decided that she was going to work outside the home after Sheldon’s death; she worked for the University of Iowa both at the hospitals, and also the library until retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the Welsh Congregational Church, Welsh Missionary Society, State Historical Society, volunteered at Weber Elementary School with the Rock and Read Program, Alumni of City High School and the University of Iowa. She so loved her family, enjoyed reading, going for rides in the country, working and being on the family farm. She was proud of her family heritage, and being a loyal Hawkeye, she loved cheering on her “hawks” on Saturday afternoon football games, especially the bowl games.

Her family includes four daughters, Bonnie and her husband, Larry Weldon of Iowa City, Becky and her husband, Craig Tubandt of Modesto, CA, Melanie Tappan of Iowa City, and Wendy and her husband, Tom Strabala of Ainsworth; two sons and their wives, Mark and Deb Tappan of Iowa City, and Kevin and Carolyn Tappan of Riverside; nine grandchildren, Matt and Eric Weldon, Andrew, James, and Michael Tappan, Tyler and Travis Tubandt, and Trenton and Carly Tappan; one sister and her husband, Karleen and Bob Ferguson of Saratoga, CA; and their children, Todd and Kerry Ferguson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.
