Viola Margaret Westcott 1906-2001

Viola Margaret Ashdown Westcott, age 95 formerly of rural route #2, Iowa City died Monday, November 26, 2001 at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon following an extended illness.

Private family services will be held today. Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Viola’s services. Memorial donations can be made to Atrium Village in Hills.

Viola was born November 17, 1906 in Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Herbert and Julia (Klaus) Ashdown. She graduated from Iowa City High School and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. For several years she taught rural schools in Johnson County. She married Albert Ralph Westcott, June 12, 1932 in Iowa City. She and her husband owned and operated Self Serve Grocery Store in Iowa City for several years. They also raised Shetland Ponies for many years.

She was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, 50 year member of the Iowa City Rebekah Lodge #416 where she was Past Noble Grand, member of Ladies Encampment Auxiliary #5, a charter member and Past Matriarch of the National Shetland Pony Club.

Her family includes her son and and his wife, Albert and Shirley Westcott of Iowa City; 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Westcott of Hills.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on December 21, 1969, and a daughter, Constance May Westcott Bream.
