Elmer S. Brant, age 92 of 954 E. Davenport Street, Iowa City died Saturday, June 29, 2002 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Michael T. Phillips officiating. Entombment will be at Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 6pm. Memorial donations can be made in Elmer’s memory to Johnson County meals on Wheels Program or to the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Elmer’s services and his family.
Elmer was born July 7, 1909, in rural Johnson County, Iowa the son of Sylvester and Catharine (Reiland) Brant. He graduated from University high School in Iowa City and had attended the State University of Iowa. On September 2, 1934, he married Elsie Rose Brown in Iowa City. For a number of years he owned and operated a service station in Coralville on First Avenue. The couple moved to Manitowoc, Wisc during the war where he worked at building submarines, twenty-eight of them to be exact. Following this they moved to Bemidji, Minnesota where they operated a resort for a time. Returning to Iowa City he worked for many years for the Rock Island Motor Transit Company retiring in 1974. Elsie died on August 14, 1978. He married Inez Margaret Wright September 29, 1979 here in Iowa City.
He was a member of the Teamster’s Union #238 in Cedar Rapids.
His family includes his wife, Inez; daughters Emily K. Starbuck of LeHigh Acres, FL, Barbara and her husband, Chuck Krall of West Branch, and Peggy Stoner of Moline, IL; son and his wife, William “Bill” and Barb Brant of Ankeny; stepchildren, Pat and her husband, Tom Matthes of Marion, and Tom and his wife, Paula Wright of Kansas City, MO; thirteen grandchidlren, Rob, Niki, Teresa, Julie, Lizabeth, Richard, Gina, Dan, Michele, Sheila, Tara, Debbie, and Daren; eleven great grandchildren, Rob Jr., Tiffany, Kyle, Ryan, Mandy, Susie, Sarah, Carly, Steven, Travis, and John; sister, Dorothy and her husband, Vincent Wetrich of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Elsie, brother, Clarence Brant, and sister, Marie Colony.
Elmer’s joys in life came from his family, fishing, gardening especially raising flowers, and his time serving his country by his work on the submarines, he was very proud of this.
