Professor Louis F. Brown, age 79 of 806 Willow Street, Iowa City died Saturday, January 26, 2002 at his home following a lengthy illness.

There will be a time of visitation for family and friends from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private family funeral services will be held on Wednesday with the Reverend Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial with military honors by the Walter Johnson Post 721 of the Coralville American Legion at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.

Mr. Louis’s family includes his wife, Betty Brown; son and his wife, Jamieson and Kathleen Brown of Iowa City; granddaughter’s Danielle and Nicole Brown; daughters, Stephanie Goolsby of Cedar Rapids, and Pamela and her husband, Larry Curtis of Tulsa, OK; brother, James F. Brown of San Pablo, CA; sisters, Evelyn Van Skike of Sun City, CA, Isabel Gallagher of Roseville, CA, Kay Beem of Tucson, AZ, and Marilyn Selzer of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by and infant son, Jeffrey Brown, brothers, Robert G. Brown and William E. Brown, sisters, Hazel K. Nolan, Patricia R. Alderman and Josephine J. Coombs.

Louis was born December 13, 1922 in Thayer, Illinois the son of James F and Josephine (Galletto) Brown. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During World War II Lou served in the United States Navy on the USS Massachusetts from October of 1942 until his discharge in December of 1945. During the 39 months he was at sea 28 of those. On January 31, 1949 he married Betty Ann Matson in Independence. They have been married for fifty-three years.

Lou received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Coe College in January of 1950 and his Masters Degree from the University of Iowa in June of 1952. He served as Supervisor of Special Education for Tama and Benton Counties from 1953 to 1956. He was a counselor at McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids from 1956 to 1957. In 1957 he received his Psychology License from the State of Iowa. He became a School Psychologist for the Cedar Rapids School District from 1957-1959. Lou received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Iowa in August of 1961. He taught special education at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He moved back to Iowa City and became principle of the University of Iowa Hospital School for two years. Lou taught Special Education at the University of Iowa for twenty-five years retiring in December of 1987. During his retirement he taught correspondence courses through the University of Iowa until he closed them in November of 2001.

He was active in many state and national organizations dealing with special education. Lou had over 50 years of teaching experience and never missed an opportunity to turn life experiences into daily lessons. He was very proud to have served his country during WWII, of his teaching accomplishments and his family. We are very thankful for all Lou has given us and how he has made our lives much richer. His dedication to family and friends will be greatly missed!

A memorial fund has been established in Lou’s name to benefit Iowa City Hospice. The family would like to thank all the great people at Iowa City Hospice for their help in our time of need!
