Letha L.Amelon, age 84 formerly of 1713 Black Diamond Road, rural Oxford died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at the Lantern Park Care and Rehab Center in Coralville following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Mark Jagnow officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm today at the funeral home. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Letha’s family and her services.

Letha was born November 13, 1917, in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Peter and Cora (Beltz) Zahner. She married Earl Clyde Amelon on June 15, 1936, in Davenport, Iowa. For a few years she worked at the Cosgrove School, she then went to work for the University of Iowa in Central Sterlization Department, where she worked for many years retiring in 1975. The couple lived in the Windham area all their married lives. Earl died August 29, 1972. Letha resided at Walden Place in Iowa City for a short time, and for nearly two years at the Lantern Park Care and Nursing Rehab Center in Coralville.

She was a member of the Windham Community Church, Windham Homemakers Club, she so loved her neighborhood, writing a book on Windham a number of years ago. Letha enjoyed painting, an avid reader, and being with her family and friends.

Her family includes two daughters, Carol Conyers of Davenport, and Joan and her husband, Henry Collins of Marshfield, Mo; three sons, Duane and his wife, Joyce Amelon of Windham, Dean and his wife, Carolyn Amelon of Iowa City, and Curtis Amelon of Windham; nine grandchildren, Kirk and his wife, Gail Conyers, Cindy Conyers, Cheri and her husband, Leroy Strubhart, Dave and his wife, Leanne Amelon, Jeff and his wife, Marge Amelon, Doug and his wife, Rose Amelon, John and his wife, Cheri Amelon, Mike Amelon, and Ron and his wife, Chris Amelon; twenty great-grandchidlren, Brett and Kara Conyers, Michael and Allen McAlerney, Dusty and Logan Strubhart, Brent, Matt, Beth, Ryan, Bria, Chelsea, Nick, Josh,, Kayla, Nolan, Danny, Bryan, Jordan and Ben; sister, Alda and her husband, Clarence Hightshoe of Iowa City, and brother and his wife, Russell and Mary Zahner of Kansas City, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Jerry Conyers; sisters, Marie Bettenhausen and Gladys Zahner; brother, Paul Zahner.
