Wayne R. (Dick) Zahradnek, 72, of Iowa City died Wednesday October 18, 2006 at home, from cancer. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday October 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City where he was a member. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3-6 P.M. Sunday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. by St. Mary’s Altar & Rosary and the Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, or Iowa City Knights of Columbus.

Dick was born October 26, 1933 in Johnson Count, Iowa, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Hasley) Zahradnek. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School. In his early years he worked for the Lackender family, Stutsmans, and Jaydon Distributing. He worked as a patient transportation driver at the U of I hospitals and Clinics for 23 years until his retirement in 1996. He then worked as a greeter for the hospital for a few years.

Dick was a member of the Eagles Lodge #695 and the Knights of Columbus. As a young man Dick was well known as a fast-pitch softball pitcher in Hills, Riverside, and Coralville.

Dick enjoyed time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, golfing and dancing.

Dick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Delores (Spenner) Zahradnek, and his 5 children. Laura (Jeff) Price, Iowa City, Larry (Connie) Zahradnek, Iowa City, Diana (Russell) Brown, Las Vegas, Daryl (Jennifer) Zahradnek, Iowa City, LeRoy Zahradnek, Iowa City. Grandchildren; Nick and Lee Price, Wayne and Aaron Zahradnek, Trevor and Leeza Brown, his brother Lyle (Hoot) Zahradnek, 10 nieces and nephews, and 17 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Dean Zahradnek, and sister Nola Forret.
