HOMESTEAD - Francis A. Bixby, 70, of rural Homestead, died at a Tipton nursing home Sunday evening after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the George L. Gay Funeral Home in Iowa City where friends may call beginning this evening. Burial will be in the Nichols Cemetery.

Mr. Bixby was born Jan. 5, 1900 at Keithburg, Ill. to Lewis and Elizabeth Curry Bixby. He married Martha Colwell on Aug. 5, 1919, in Colwell. She preceded him in death in 1942.

On Aug. 28, 1947, he married Bernice Burkett at Kohoka, Mo.

Mr. Bixby farmed and operated a saw mill in the Richmond and Nichols area until moving to Homestead in 1952.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Surviving are his widow; five sons, George and John Bixby of Granton, Wis, James Bixby of Ainsworth, and Francis and Frank Bixby of Homestead; five daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Elsie)Saultz of Muscatine, Mrs. Robert (Iota) Jensen of Iowa City, Mrs. Jack (Iola) Blakely of Iowa City, and Judy Bixby and Jane Wilcut, both of Homestead; a stepson, Franklin Brooks of Williamsburg; a step-daughter, Mrs. Joan Carruthers of Homestead; 29 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Arthur Bixby of Letts and Glen of Nichols, and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Poole of Nichols and Mrs. Myrtle Knox of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by one son, two daughters, two great grandsons, a brother and four sisters.
