Barbara Frances Bowles, 70, passed away on Thursday September 14, 2006.

Funeral services will be held 11:00am Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Lensing Funeral Service-605 Kirkwood Ave. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7 pm at Lensing’s. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Public Library Fund in her name.

She was born to Margaret and Oscar Lundgen on August 14, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. She worked as a secretary at AFMA in Chicago, and part time at Woolworths Departmemt Store, where she met her husband Jack Bowles. They were married in Chicago on November 10, 1961. Barbara and Jack moved to Iowa City in the fall of 1963 and this is where she chose to live and raise her children.

Barbara worked for many years at FS Services, then as the Sales and Catering Manager for the Ironmen Inn. She retired from the University College of Dentistry where she was the secretary to the late Dr. Gil Lilly, a man she admired and a job she love.

Barbara enjoyed many things throughout her life, she was an avid contract bridge player, bowled for many years. She held the position of the Iowa City’s Woman’s Bowling Association secretary for about 10 years. She was a regular at the area libraries to fulfill her love of reading. She also knitted and crocheted.

Barbara’s biggest joy in life was raising her children and enriching their lives as they grew up. She introduced them to many of things she loved. She was a girl scout leader, boy scout leader, PTA member, and block mother. She also spent many years as a youth league bowling coach, teaching the sport to her children, who still participate in the sport.

Her children were everything to her, and they will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her husband, Jack of almost 45 years, her children, Lesa Bowles of Iowa City, Mark Bowles and his wife Julie of Tampa, FL, Scott Bowles of Chicago, IL, Jeff Bowles and his wife Linda of Houston, TX. One sister, Joyce Meyer and her husband Joe of Sarasota, FL, her niece Barbara Zych of Sarasota, Fl, and her nephew David Meyer and his family of Tuscon, AZ. And by her beloved cat Billy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Debbie and a nephew Joey.
