Vaughn S. Henderson, 75, of Iowa City, Iowa died at home Friday, August 25, 2006 from lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 2 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation, including fellowship and food, will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Vaughn was born October 11, 1930 near Edwards, Missouri, son of the Reverend Sherman and Delma (Houseworth) Henderson. He and his brothers and sisters grew up on the family farm in Benton Co., MO. He graduated from Climax Springs High School. After serving in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War, the G. I. Bill helped him attend Central Missouri State College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (1955) and a master’s degree in Business Education (1958). He taught high school in Clarksdale, Hardin and Independence, MO, where he enjoyed seeing former President Truman take his daily walks. He taught business economics at Mankato (MN) State College (1960-63) and Central Missouri State College (1964-66). He continued graduate study at the University of Nebraska and the University of Iowa.

Vaughn met Kathleen Sterner in 1969, and they married in Iowa City on August 17, 1971.

He taught at Iowa City High School throughout the 1970s and was the business education coordinator for the Iowa City Community School District. He also taught at Iowa City West High School in the early 1980s, before working as a realtor at the Means Agency (1984-1995) and Crane and Associates (1996-1999).

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He loved music, golf, fishing, and telling stories. He coached the sports teams of his son and daughter and provided them instruction in finance, politics, driving, gardening, and St. Louis Cardinals lore.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Henderson; son, David Henderson, and daughter, Margaret Henderson--all of Iowa City; his sister, Iola Teddy Kurkendall, of Dayton, OH; his brother, Dale Henderson of Wheatland, MO; sister-in-law Eva Henderson of Warsaw, MO; his nephews, Donald (Ann) Wilson of Marshall, MO; Russell (Linda) Fette of Collinsville, IL; Scotty (Roberta) Henderson of Warsaw, MO; his nieces, Carol (Cecil) Troutwine of Independence, MO; Jackie Henderson (Ted Kooshian) of Brooklyn, NY; Karen (Tom) Russell of Edwardsville, IL; Susan (Denny Malacarne) Klein of Belleville, IL; Sharon Hardin of Dayton, OH; Sylvia (Leon) Burns of Camdenton, MO; and Theresa (Neil) Mitchell of Bedford, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Wyman Henderson and Garry Wayne Henderson; and his sisters, Wana Baggerly, Wilma Fette, Glenda Scherman, and infant Juanita Henderson.
