FORMER POLICE CHIEF PASSES
----------------
John B. Lloyd Succumbs Tuesday; Funeral Thursday
---------
Over the city hall today, floats the United States flag, bearing to the community the sad news that the city's former chief of police, Mr. John Bellfield Lloyd, has passed away. The end came a few minutes after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at a local hospital. It followed a protracted period of unconsciousness, extending from Saturday night, September 17th, when he was stricken unexpectedly.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Hohenschuh mortuary. Rev. Ira J. Houston will officiate and Masonic rites will be observed at the grave. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery. The Welsh quartet will provide the music.
Mr. Lloyd was 60 years of age on February 2nd. He was born in Elkhart, Ill., and had been a resident of Iowa City 18 years. Surviving are his widow and four daughters, Mesdames Ora Smith, Mt. Pleasant; Moss Serup, Iowa City; Fred Beck, Mt. Pleasant, and M.E. Smith, Chicago. Four grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Lloyd was widely known throughout Iowa City, Johnson county, and environing counties. He was a member of the Methodist church, and had filled various offices in that institution. He was a Mason, and had been honored with every degree in that order, up to, and including, the thirty-second. He had, likewise filled numerous offices in that great fraternity. Mr. Lloyd was also an Eastern Star, and was a past patron of the order. He was an Odd Fellow, Woodman, and member and officer of these and other organizations during his active life of three score years. Not only in Iowa City, but elsewhere in Iowa, he had been given public recognition for his good citizenship and ability as an official, Wellman having named him mayor, among other honors conferred upon him, ere he came to Iowa City.
Mr. Lloyd's large circle of friends throughout the community will read with sorrow of his death. He was a man, as the above facts indicate, of high standing. His genial nature and fine character endeared him to all who knew him, young and old, and they will unite in tendering sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of grief.
