Mrs. Barbara FREES, 97, Johnson County pioneer and one of the oldest residents of the county, died Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Bireline, 821 Seventh Avenue.

Mrs. Frees was born December 7, 1841 in Albig, Hess-Darmstadt, Germany. She was married to John Frees in that country and came to the united States in 1865. The couple settled on a farm at Oxford, where Mrs. Frees remained until 1937, when she came to Iowa City to make her home with Mrs. Bireline.

Preceded in death by her husband on January 26, 1879, and two children, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bireline, and two sons, John and Edward Frees, both of Oxford.

Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Frees enjoyed an active life until six months ago, when her health began to fail. Serious illness overtook her only during the last two weeks.

A member of St. Mary's church at Oxford during her residence there, Mrs. Frees has been a member of St. Mary's church in Iowa City since 1937.

Funeral services will take place at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning in St. Mary's church here, with burial in Mt. Calvary cemetery at Oxford. The remains are at the Hohenschuh mortuary.
