C. C. Ries
C. C. Ries, 85, of 1822 Friendship Street, died today in an
Iowa City nursing home after a long illnes [sic].
Requiem high mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church with burial in Oakland Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Donohue Mortuary to recite the rosary. The parish rosary will be at 8 p.m. Friends may call at the mortuary after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Ries was born Oct. 12, 1883, in Iowa City, the son of John T. and Mary Baker Ries. He graduated from St. Mary's High School. He was co-owner of the Ries-Iowa Book Store until his retirement and sale of the store. On Nov. 9, 1901, he married Emma Kripner at St. Ambrose College in Davenport. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus here, and became a Fourth Degree member of the group. He also was a past grand knight of Marquette Council, a past faithful navigator of the Fourth Degree, a past district deputy and a past state deputy of the organization. He was a charter member of the Iowa City Elks Club, and a past exalted ruler of the club. He served terms on the Iowa City School Board and Library Board.
Surviving are his widow; a brother, Ulmer of Iowa City; two sisters, Miss Hilda Ries of Iowa City, and Mrs. C. P. (Marina) Strittmater of Tucson, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and two sisters died earlier.
