J.W. “Bill” Condon, 77, of 3571 Hanks Dr., died peacefully Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services to celebrate Bill’s life will be held Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bill Condon Memorial Fund.
Bill was born February 11, 1929 in Iowa City, the son of William and Mary Kelly Condon. Was a graduate of City High School and the University of Iowa. On September 9, 1950 he married Judy Windsor at St. Thomas More Church.
Bill had served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and leadership under fire during action on December 8, 1952.
Bill had been the business manager at the State Hygienic Lab on the University of Iowa Oakdale campus for 27 years, retiring in 1991.
Bill was a member of St. Mary’s Church, where he and his wife sang with the church choir. They volunteered at the Johnson County Senior Center and sang with the Voices of Experience. Bill was a member of the Old Capitol Barbershop Chorus and involved in numerous musicals with the Iowa City Community Theatre. For over 35 years he had been a referee for Iowa High School Football and Basketball. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid reader.
Most important in Bill’s life were his wife and nine children. He cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed following their athletic endeavors. They always brought a smile to his face. He was a friend to many and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy; six daughters, Lynn (Dale) Hill of Hills, Beth (Bruce) Vander Schel, Jane (Craig) Hambright, Patricia (Jim) Jensen, all of Iowa City, Cathy (Ellis) Schultz of West Branch and Barbara Condon of Knoxville, TN.; two sons, Steve (Carol) Condon of Philadelphia, PA. and Dennis Condon of Iowa City; his daughter-in-law Diane Condon of Iowa City; 23 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren; and his sister, Jane Jansen of Iowa City.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, one son David, twin granddaughters Rachel and Rebecca Condon, great grandson Joey Hambright and brother-in-law, Robert.
