Mary Catherine Hebl, 94, of Iowa City died Sunday, March 19, 2006 from injuries suffered in a house fire.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 10AM at St.Wenceslaus Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call at St. Wenceslaus Church from 2 to 8pm, Wednesday, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30 pm by the Catholic Daughters and the National Society of Foresters and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Tiffin First Responders, Johnson County 4-H or the Iowa State Fair c/o The Blue Ribbon Foundation, Box 57130, Des Moines, IA 50317. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
Mary was born October 6, 1911 in Newport Township, Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry N. and Anna Scherrer Kasper. On April 30, 1930 she married Elmer W. Hebl at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. Elmer died March 22, 1962.
Mary and her family farmed west of Iowa City for over 76 years. They were awarded the Farm Safety Award in 1960. Mary had also cooked at the Delta Gamma Sorority for many years and was a waitress at the Carousel Restaurant in Coralville.
Mary was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Rita’s Court and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She was a volunteer with Goodwill Industries and had been actively involved with the Johnson County Farm Bureau Women, the Union Township Women’s Club, Jonco Jills, and a 4-H leader for 50 years in which she started one of the 1st clubs in Johnson County.
Mary enjoyed square dancing and had a great passion for cooking which she will be remembered for her kolaches and homemade noodles. She had a love for flowers, gardening, Hereford Cattle, playing cards and the Iowa State Fair, which she attended for over 70 years.
Mary is survived by her ten children; William “Bill” (Mary Ann) Hebl of Cedar Rapids,
Bernard (Norma) Hebl of Albuquerque, NM., Maynard Hebl of Iowa City, Anna Marie “Ann” (Don) Draker of Hills, Doris (Robert) Swartzendruber of Iowa City, Elmer (Sharon “Shari”) Hebl of West Branch, Lawrence (Wendy) Hebl of Iowa City, George (Deb) Hebl of Solon, Michael ( Barbara) Hebl of West Branch and Mary Rita Hebl
of Iowa City; 47 Grandchildren, 55 Great Grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; one sister Agnes Maier of Iowa City and a life long neighbor Neva Haman.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, eight brothers Edward, Raymond, Elmer, Herman, Ambrose, John, Joseph, William, her daughter-in-law Betty Hebl, and two grandsons Charles Draker and a stillborn.
