birth of John W Davis 1861?

A search of the Decatur county birth records shows my grandfather's brother (Autie Davis) was born to a John W Davis and his wife Ida E Moore. It says that John was born in Iowa, but the county name isnt complete. what i can read says: fferson. seems to be jefferson county. HOWEVER, John W Davis was born abt 1861 (according to the 1900 census)could be as late at 1863 as determined by other sources. as this was before records were collected, where can i look for more information on John W Davis? So far, i have searched page by page through the 1870 Jefferson county census without luck. As an adult, he was on the 1900 census in Montana, and the 1910 census in Decatur County Iowa. I have a membership at IGS, so if it can be obtained there, that would be great.He may have had a brother Henry born abt 1866.
