The Fairfield Ledger, Aug. 23, 1882, Page 3, col. 7.

DEATH OF ANOTHER PIONEER. Last week’s Sigourney News mentions the death, on the 14th inst., near Martinsburg, that county, of Mr. William Waugh, in the eighty-third year of his age. Mr. Waugh will be remembered by all our pioneer citizens as a character of early Iowa, and his death will be deeply regretted by many of his old friends who survive him. The News further states: “In 1839 he removed from Petersburg, Va., to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, and from there he went to a point near the Des Moines river, not far from where Oskaloosa now stands, but the location did not suit him, and he again removed, coming to Keokuk County in 1845, and located where he lived until his death. He was an influential citizen and held many offices of trust, and was a man respected by all. He was the founder of the noted place called Waugh’s Point, on the old stage road from Fairfield to Oskaloosa. This point was known the state over, by all who traveled through that section of country.”
