Obituary

Phoebe EDWARDS,

was born in Frederick county, Virginia, October 20, 1809, and died January 7 (sic - 8th), 1906. She was the last remaining of a family of sixteen children. In early childhood she came with her father's family, locating in Clinton county, Ohio, where in 1812, she married Raleigh HUMPHREY. To this union were born eleven children, three of whom survive her, Sanford, Thomas and Benjamin, all of Pleasant Plain. The latter two with her granddaughter, Carrie HUMPHREY, lived with and cared for her since the death of her husband, which occurred April 4, 1878. She also leaves nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her death.

The deceased was one of the earliest settlers, coming with her husband to Iowa in 1839, and locating on a farm which has ever since been her home. They endured the hardships of pioneer life, her first home being a mere rail pen with a prairie grass covering for a roof.

She was one of the first members of the Society of Friends in this community and she remained true to her belief, but her great age has prevented her taking any active part in public life of late years.

She was sincerely loved and respected by all who knew her for her loyal upright character,, staunch friendship and her willingness to do a kindness wherever and whenever she could. Thus goes out of our lives in to a brighter life beyond, one who was ready and waiting the Master's summons.

The funeral was held at the home January 10. Interment at the Pleasant Plain Friend's cemetery (sic).
