Services Sunday afternoon, Batavia, for former Fairfield businessmanJames E. ALFRED, 65, former Fairfield businessman, passed away Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Mercy hospital in Burlington (note: in Des Moines Co., IA). He had been in poor health for the past two years, and suffered a stroke on Wednesday morning.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Campbell funeral home in Batavia, in charge of Rev. S. P. Williamson. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in this city.
Mr. ALFRED was born in 1876 (note: on April 12th). He started business in a barbershop in Batavia in 1889, and worked with his brother Ed until 1928. He then moved to Fairfield, where he worked at barbering until 1936. In that year he moved to Burlington, where he had been engaged in the barbering trade until his death. He was married in 1903 Miss Jennie ARMSTRONG.
Surviving him are his widow; one son, William ALFRED of Burlington; one grandson, Bobby ALFRED; two brothers, Stewart ALFRED of Eldon, and George ALFRED of Ottumwa; and one sister, Mrs. E. B. BROWN of Burlington. One son Ashen (sic - Asher) preceded him in death six years ago, and a daughter Wilma, in infancy.

… Mrs. O. A. HARPER, 200 West Grimes street returned Saturday from a two weeks visit in the home of her sister, Mrs. James ALFRED in Burlington and with another sister and other relatives. …
… Mr. and Mrs. Elmer RODGERS and daughter Constance of Canton, Ill. where weekend guests in the home of Mrs. RODGERS' mother, Mrs. O. A. HARPER and also the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. RODGERS on South Main street. They attended the funeral of their uncle James ALFRED held in Batavia Sunday afternoon and left Sunday night for a short vacation trip which will take them to Colorado.
