Verda Lucille Whitcanack Parmelee, 95, of Cantril died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cantril United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Rekward officiating. A private burial was in Lebanon Cemetery.

Donations to Cantril Grass Roots Memorial Fund, Cantril Public Library Memorial, Cantril United Methodist Church or Cantril Volunteer Firemen may be left at the church or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 142, Cantril 52542-0142.

Mrs. Parmelee was born Jan 1, 1910, near Lebanon, the daughter of John F. and Della Doan Whitcanack. She married Lee Joseph Parmelee June 29, 1937. He died in May 1933.

Mrs. Parmelee lived on family farms in the Lebanon, Mount Sterling and Cantril areas. She attended Niles and Cantril schools and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1927. After high school, she enrolled in nurse's training in Keokuk. In 1929, she moved to California to complete her training and education at the Pasadena School of Nursing and Pasadena Junior College. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1932. She practiced her profession until 1940 and resumed in 1958 after her children were older.

Mrs. and Mr. Parmelee lived in Alhambra, Crestline, Bakersfield and Westchester. Mrs. Parmelee returned to Cantril in July 1994.

Mrs. Parmelee was active in Presbyterian women's associations in California. She was a member of Cantril United Methodist Church and participated in the United Methodist women's group for several years.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Lee Parmelee of Cantril; one son, Ronald Charles Parmelee of Austin, Texas; one sister, Dora Marie Hughes of Cantril; and two brothers, Hollis M. Whitcanack of Arcadia, Calif. and Dale E. Whitcanack of East Moline, Ill.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Helen Whitcanack Carnahan; and four brothers, Delbert, William Glen, Orville K. and Richard L. Whitcanack.
