Death By His Own Hand.

Last week's LEDGER announced the death of Colin E. CAMPBELL at Chariton the night of the 17th inst. Later advices show that he took his own life. Mr. CAMPBELL's home had been in Chicago for several years, but he had been in Chariton for several days. He had called frequently at the home of Mrs. Bessie Mullikin, a childhood acquaintance in this city, who resides with her mother, Mrs. S. M. Boling. On the evening in question he seemed gloomy and morose and Mrs. Boling feared that he might do himself some injury. She asked a neighbor to aid in getting him to leave the house, which CAMPBELL agreed to do. He stepped into a bedroom, however, lay down on the bed and shot himself with a pistol which he had been carrying. Death was instantaneous. The body was brought to this city, CAMPBELL's home for many years, for burial Thursday. Funeral services were held at the home of W. E. THOMPSON on East Burlington street, conducted by Rev. Pearse Pinch. Mrs. E. M. CAMPBELL, Mr. and Mrs. John CAMPBELL, Campbell FARMER and Mrs. GEORGE, Chicago, were among members of the family present at the funeral.

A Sad Ending.

The body of Mr. C. E. CAMPBELL (of)
Chicago, was brought here for (burial)
last week. It was a sad home (com-)
ing for one who was born in (this)
county. The CAMPBELL family (is)
among the best known of the (early)
settlers, living first on one of the (nic-)
est farms of the county and ho(mes in)
this city. He whose death is (now)
recorded was one of the bri(ghtest)
minds we ever had among us. (He)
was one of the best read of all (who)
ever lived in Fairfield, and a (son of)
the late Ed. CAMPBELL, Jr., H(aving)
set himself about it he could (have)
ranked among the highest. Th(at he)
came to his death by his own h(and was)
a cause of profound pain to all (who)
knew him. And yet nobody can (pass)
harsh judgement upon a man (that)
comes to an end so bitter. If t(his)
is done in sound reason who (can)
measure the unhappiness of one (who)
turns his hand against his own (self?)
If the miscarrying of things (has)
clouded reason he is hardly ( ? )
be pitied of all mankind. It (is)
therefore with a sorrow se(en)
with large charity that the frien(ds of)
Collin E. CAMPBELL gathered (at)
his grave Thursday of last week (and)
saw the remains consigned to (their)
last resting place.

C. E. CAMPBELL of Chicago, shot and killed himself at the home of Mrs. Bessie Millikan at Chariton. He was a persistent suitor for Mrs. Millikan's hand and had been in Chariton about ten days, calling on her repeatedly and pressing his suit. She discouraged him and on the night of tragedy he became desperate. He displayed a revolver and Mrs. Millikan, fearing that he intended to kill her, slipped from the house and went to a neighbor's. Her mother in the meantime had gone and notified the police, but when they arrived CAMPBELL refused to accompany them and after some words he stepped into a dark room, lay down upon a bed and put a bullet through his brain. He is near 50 years of age and leaves a mother in Chicago.

CAMPBELL DIES FOR LOST LOVE.
C. E. CAMPBELL, of Chicago, an Old Fairfield Boy, Commits Suicide.
FUNERAL WAS HELD HERE.
Shoots Himself and Dies Instantly At the Home of Mrs. Milligan, A Former Sweetheart.

C. E. CAMPBELL, of Chicago, a former resident of this city, committed suicide Tuesday evening at the home of his sweetheart, Mrs. Bessie Milligan in Chariton. Mrs. Milligan is silent regarding this sad occurrence, but friends who know both her and Mr. CAMPBELL say that her refusal to wed him caused him to take his life.

Mr. CAMPBELL had gone to Chariton about a week ago from Chicago, and had given his friends to understand that he intended going into business there. He called upon Mrs. Milligan several times after arriving in Chariton. It is sad that they were at one time sweethearts but that something had come between them.

Mrs. Milligan stated Wednesday that CAMPBELL was spending the evening with her Tuesday evening and that while in conversation with her about 10:30 o'clock he pulled a revolver from his pocket and said to her: "We will end it all right now." Mrs. Milligan though terribly frightened succeeded in soothing the man and excusing herself, saying she was going to get a drink of water. She ran to a neighbor's house and telephoned the officers, who hastened to her home.

When the officers arrived they went to the door and requested CAMPBELL to come out; he at first refused and then said he would go out another door While the officers were going to the other door they heard a pistol shot and entering the house found him expiring with a bullet wound in his right temple.

Friends believe that the dead man had called upon Mrs. Milligan with the intention of taking both their lives.

The remains were brought to this city last evening on Burlington No. 4, and taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. W. E. THOMPSON, from where the funeral services were held this afternoon at three o'clock conducted by Rev. Pearse Pinch of the Congregational church.
