Lou Ella Jane Smith, 91, of Cantril, died at 9:35 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Cantril Christian Church, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

Visitation will open at 4 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the family present from 7-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cantril Christian Church or Cantril Grass Roots and left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 27232 Gold Avenue, Cantril 52542.

Mrs. Smith wsa born Sept. 4, 1914, in Cantril, the daughter of Guy L. and Hazel Norris Hustead. She married H. Donald Smith April 10, 1937, in Des Moines. He died March 18, 1990.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Cantril High School, received her bachelor's degree in social administration from University of Iowa and did graduate work at the University of Chicago. She was employed by the Iowa State Department of Social Welfare and was the first supervisor of the Polk County child welfare unit. With her husband, she retired in 1963 and moved to their farm on the northeast edge of Cantril. Her pastimes following retrirement were spending time with family, traveling between Cantril and Fairfield Bay, Ark., where they had another home.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherry D. Kleveter and husband David of Missouri Valley and Linda J. Sharp and husband Jack of Cantril; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Imogene Hustead Sanger.
