Mrs. Mary J. HUFFORD, wife of the late Dr. R. H. HUFFORD, died at her home on East Burlington street Wednesday shortly after midnight. She had been ill less than a week with pneumonia, and the sudden summons was a great shock to our people in general. Mrs. HUFFORD was the eldest daughter of Bernhart and Elizabeth S. HENN, whose names are closely connected with the earlier histry of Fairfield and of Iowa. She was born in Burlington in 1845, and when a mere babe came with her parents to this city. She grew to womanhood here and was married to Dr. R. H. HUFFORD November 15th, 1869. Two children were born on this marriage, E. H. HUFFORD and Mrs. W. W. ISRAEL, both of whom reside here. Mrs. HUFFORD was a woman of unusual intelligence and refinement. She was wholly domestic in her tastes, and most devoted to those about her. It was rare good fortune to have known her in all her womanly accomplishments and graces, as those nearest her did, and the gentle, unassuming life she led, the kindly services she was so wont to perform, will give her a high place in the memory of her friends and associates in this city. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery Saturday afternoon, and the services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Lynch, rector of the Episcopal church of Ottumwa.
The death of Mrs. HUFFORD will awaken many recollections in the memories of the older residents of Fairfield. She was the sole surviving member in this city and one of its best and most honored families. Her father, Hon. Bernhart HENN, was very closely identified with the early history of city, county and state, with their political affairs and material interests. He was appointed register of the land office here by President Polk and discharged the duties of the position for a term of four years. From 1849 to 1853 he was a representative in congress from the new state of Iowa, which then consisted of only two districts. He was the head of the banking house of Henn, Williams & Co., one of our earliest financial institutions and one of the greatest of its time in Iowa. Mr. HENN saw very early the possibilities of the new state, and was active in developing her resources through the construction of railways, and there is no doubt that much of our present wealth and greatness rests upon the foundation which he and those who labored with him laid so substantially.
