Leo G. Smith, age 88 of Batavia, entered into rest on Nov. 12, 2005 at his home.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1917 in Jefferson County to Alec and Lydia Graber Smith. He married Dorothy Frescoln on May 19, 1940 near Eldon.

He was raised and educated in Jefferson County, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1936. He was a civilian surveyor for the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He and his wife farmed in Jefferson County most of their adult lives.

He was a member of the Batavia United Methodist Church and a former member of the Methodist Men's group, a member of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge of Batavia for over 60 years where he was a past master and was secretary-treasurer for many years, Arbor Vitae Order of Eastern Star of Batavia and a former member of the Locust Township board of trustees.

He is survived by his wife, his son Robert Smith of Batavia, his grandchildren Donna Mauck, Todd Jones, Tom Smith and Julie Smith Halbur, 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Patricia Jones, a great great grandchild and a brother Donald Smith.

Funeral services will be Wednesday morning 11 o'clock at the Batavia United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas Raphael-Nakos officiating. Interment will be in the Batavia Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at the Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia. Masonic services conducted by the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge will be at 7 p.m. with the family present following services until 8:30 p.m. at the Chapel. Casketbearers will be Todd and Jesse Jones, David and Zack Mauck, Steve Dallner and Marvin Whitmore.

Memorials may be directed to the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge or Batavia United Methodist Church.
