HICKENBOTTOM DIES SUDDENLY

Joe E. HICKENBOTTOM, 79, died suddenly at his home at 304 East Adams St. about 10:30 this morning. He was in his usual health and had gone to the basement to fix the furnace when Mrs. HICKENBOTTOM heard her husband fall and when he failed to answer, went down in the basement and found him lying on the floor. She then called her neighbor, Mrs. Harlan Perry, and Mr. HICKENBOTTOM passed away a few minutes after Mrs. Perry arrived. He had suffered a stroke two years ago from which he had never fully recovered.

Mr. HICKENBOTTOM, the son of James and Jane HICKENBOTTOM, was born on a farm near Lockridge in 1866 and moved from there when a young man to Oklahoma where he farmed until coming to reside in Fairfield in 1905. He married Edith VERNON of Fairfield in 1906, who survives. After returning here to make his home, he was in the real estate business until he was forced to retire two years ago as a result of the stroke. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving besides his wife are two children: Mrs. Dorothy SAMMONS of Mt. Pleasant and a son, Wade HICKENBOTTOM of Denver, Colorado, who was recently discharged from the army; three sisters: Mesdames Mary DAMM of Glendale, Iowa, Ida McCARTY of Fairfield and Ada DYER of Nebraska and three grandchildren: Marilyn and Delores SAMMONS and Shirley HICKENBOTTOM. He was preceded in death by two brothers James and Charles HICKENBOTTOM and one sister, Mrs. OVERHOLSER.

The body is at the Weston Behner funeral home pending arrangements.
