PAY TRIBUTE TO HUGH R. HAYNES

Rev. Williamson Officiated; Burlington Navy Reserve Here

Hugh Ralph HAYNES, whose serious illness and death in far away Managua, Nicaragua, has caused much sorrow in the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary HAYNES and family, has also merited the sorrow and sympathy of the community, that one so young should have to die, after making so gallant a fight for life.

After finishing grade school he attended High school for two years before enlisting in the Navy. He had several pleasant visits home on furloughs and his mother and Uncle John BLUHM, a member of the HAYNES household, who is a retired regular army man, drove to New Orleans with him where he joined his mates of the U. S. destroyer, on his last visit home. Mrs. HAYNES treasures letters written by his comrades after he was unable to write telling of his condition, when he was so ill.

He is remembered by his schoolmates of the Washington grade school, as cheerful, original and quite forceful member of their civic classes in which he took a leading part as member of the council.

His was a brave and courageous spirit and the tribute paid by the men of the navy from Burlington was fitting in recognition of the service he had rendered his country.

The comrade of Santiago, Cal., who brought the body home, and the twenty Naval Reserve men from Burlington with the recruiting officer from there, were in full charge of the impressive though simple services when he was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery yesterday. A volley by the firing squad of navy men and taps (sic - Taps) by their trumpeter, with the echo being given by Charles Lynn of this city, concluded the service at the grave.

Rev. S. P. Williamson of the First Christian church officiated at the last rites held in the church. The music was furnished by Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. A. C. Johnson who sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Williamson also sang "City Four Square" as a solo. They were accompanied on the piano by Mrs. William Stever.
