CLARANCE HAYNES COMMITS SUICIDE

Plumber Dies In Hospital Four Hours After He Took Poison In His Shop

Clarence E. HAYNES, 50 years old, and a well known plumber, committed suicide yesterday afternoon by taking poison in his plumbing shop near the Boy Scout swimming pool. He was found by his son Charles, who thought him under the influence of liquor, and did not summon help until four o'clock. He then called Sheriff Charles G. Butcher, who, as soon as he saw the man, knew that it was a suicide case and hurried to get Dr. W. T. Webb. The victim, still alive, but with no pulse, was taken in his own truck to the Jefferson County Hospital, where he died at six o'clock.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Hoskins Undertaking Parlors in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly and interment will take place in Evergren cemetery.

Clarence HAYNES was born December 25, 1876 in this city. He wa (sic) married in 1900, and the following children survive him: William Clyde, Charles, Hugh whose whereabouts is not known, Percy, and one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude HENDRICKS of Burlington.

Yesterday brought a series of tragedies into HAYNE's life. About ten o'clock he was served legal notice of a suit for divorce brought by his wife, and an injunction forbidding him to molest her or the children. The paper was read to him at his barn at the rear of his residence, 1200 East Adams street. He made but little comment and accompanied the sheriff to the house where he spoke a few words to his wife and got a bundle of clothing. He asked the sheriff to take him to the home of his father, Israel HAYNES, 600 South Sixth street. He was told that he could have possession of his team and wagon, but remarked that he would not need them. It is thought now that he made up his mind in a twinkling to take his life.

Sometime before noon he bought an ounce of carbolic acid at a drug store, laughing and joking as he waited for it to be wrapped. The next development was when he was discovered, where he had fallen off a chair in his shop. The bottle that had contained the poison was found in his pocket, drained of its ounce of contents. The label had been scraped off.
