MRS. CHRIS HARTMAN

The following tribute to Mrs. Chris HARTMAN, who passed away recently at her home east of the city, was written by a close friend of hers, Mrs. Jennie Prince, Ledger reporter.

When the news came over the phone Wednesday morning that Mrs .Chris HARTMAN (sic) had passed over the Borderland and had gone to meet her Saviour, it was a great shock to the community.

Minnie as so many of us knew and called her, had been in failing health for three years, and for the past 18 months she has been gradually and continually failing and weakening. Everything possible was done to bring her back to health. Even physicians seemed perplexed as to the nature of her trouble.

But she was always cheerful, hopeful and uncomplaining and always so thankful that she was able to be up and around the house and a comfort to her loved husband. But on Wednesday morning she arose and, as was her usual custom did her early morning work, not realizing that "death" lurked so near. But at 5:15 o'clock without a murmur, she passed out to be with her Lord and Master who had said "Thy work is finished. Come unto Me."

How true it is that in the midst of life we are in death.

Mrs. HARTMAN was born April 30, 1871 in Fairfield city. She was the oldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie SCHMIDT. When she was quite small, the family moved to Chicago, where they lived a short time. They returned again to Jefferson County where Minnie grew to young womanhood in the Beckwith community. There she endeared herself to her schoolmates. She was one to be depended upon. If she made a promise she fulfilled it.

On Oct. 7, 1892 she was united in marriage to Chris HARTMAN and she proved herself a true and unreserved companion. They have ever lived a happy contented married life for almost 45 years.

The family home has always been in Jefferson County with the exception of two years spent near Nevada, Mo.

They were never blessed with any children, but when Mr. HARTMAN's brother's wife passed away leaving a little son, Christ and Minnie, kind hearted as they both always were, took the little one into their home and gave him a loving father's and mother's care the same as if he was their own. As he grew to manhood, Taylor is a living monument to his training in the HARTMAN home. When a little daughter came to bless the Taylor HARTMAN home only last Sunday morning, how happy Minnie was when she announced the news to her friends.

After over one-half a century of residence here in Jefferson County, her well ordered life of diligence and thoughtful kindness has won the affection fo countless friends, many of whom were influenced by her uprighteous character. It is safe to say that no one ever considered her an enemy.

She leaves to mourn her departure, a heart broken husband, one sister, Mrs. Emma RENBSLEPACH to whom she was doubly attached and to whom she looked and depended upon so much in her illness.

We would not wish her back for we know she is at rest with her Heavenly Father and other loved ones. And the memory she leaves with us is a rich treasure.
