The HARRIS family moved to Fairfield from Pennsylvania where Wayne's father was a blacksmith. His grandfather came from a long line of "smithies" in Ireland.
Wayne was only eight years old when the family arrived here. In the spring of 1900 he went to Hedrick, to join his brother who had started a blacksmith shop in that community. The brothers returned to Fairfield two years later and operated a shop here until 1916 when Wayne opened his own business is (sic) what was known as Gilbert's feed barn at that time.
He erected his own building at the rear of his home in 1922 and his shop was located there until his retirement earlier this year.
Robert Wayne HARRIS, 71, was born Aug. 7, 1882, at Sheffensburg, Pa. He was the son of the late John and Anna BRECKENMAKER HARRIS. He was united in marriage on May 25, 1908, to Bertha STANFORD, who survives.
A long-time resident of this community, he was a member of the Methodist church, Eagles lodge (sic - Club/Aerie) and Walton club.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Robert, Seattle, Wash., and Roy, San Diego, Calif. He is also survived by four grandchildren; a brother, Walter HARRIS, and a sister, Mary HARRIS, both of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters who passed away at the age of 2½ and 1½ years old, and a brother, Glenn, who passed away two years ago.
