THE FAIRFIELD LEDGER, Fairfield, Iowa, April 23, 1902

A PIONEER WOMAN GONE
Saturday evening April 12th, at 9 o'clock, Mrs. W T Long died at her home one and a half miles east of Batavia. Eder Jane James was born at Burlington March 20th, 1838. Her parents came from England and settled in Ohio, but later moved to Burlington. The father died there when the daughter was two years old, and she removed with her mother to Jefferson county. They located near Batavia, where she had since resided. March 27th 1859, Miss James was united in marriage with W T Long. Nine children were born to them, two of whom died in childhood. A husband and seven children survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother. Her children are Ellis A of Albia, Chas T of Lordsberg, Cal., Mrs. Geo. Tuller of Drakesville, Mrs. W C Latta, Mrs. Geo Hidy of Batavia, and John and Florence, who are still at home. All were present and attended her in her last illness. Mrs. Long was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist church, where she continued in membership until her death. She was an earnest, Christian woman, and her influence for good was felt throughout the community in which she lived. While we are sorry to lose such a loving one, yet we feel that our loss is her gain. Funeral services were held at the Batavia Methodist church April 18th, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. Shane, assisted by Rev C L Walker of the Christian church. The body was laid in the Dunkard cemetery near those of the mother, three brothers and two children.
