Joint Funeral Monday For 2 Young Drowning Victims

Joint funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 30, for Thomas Lee HAMMES and Edward John TURECEK, both 11, who were drowned in a farm pond Friday between 11 a.m. and noon. The boys were cousins.

The services Monday will be at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father S. A. CONRAD, Weller, Iowa, officiating. He is an uncle of the two boys. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Prayers for a Christian Wake will be recited at the Raymond Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Jefferson County officers said there were no witnesses to the accident. It is assumed the two boys were playing on the farm pond on the HAMMES farm when the ice gave way. The accident was discovered about noon and help was summoned. The HAMMES farm is located 5½ miles northeast of Fairfield.

The bodies were recovered from the pond by county officers, Fairfield Firemen and members of the Police Reserve and Posse. The second body was brought to the surface at 12:55 p.m.

At the time of the accident those at the scene identified the boys as Tommie HAMMES and his cousin, Eddie CONRAD. After the Ledger had gone to press it was learned the second boy's name is Edward John TURECEK. Herbert CONRAD is his step-father.

Edward John TURECEK

Edward John TURECEK was born Aug. 28, 1959, in Iowa City. He was the son of George Allen TURECEK, Iowa City, and Mrs. Guadalupe PONCE CONRAD, route 3, Fairfield.

The family resides on a farm southeast of Fairfield. The boy was a student in the sixth grade at Pence Elementary School.

Edward John TURECEK is survived by his parents and step-father, Herbert CONRAD; two sisters, Shelley and Kim; two brothers, Rodney and George Michael at home; one half-sister, Gerri, and a half-brother, Greg, also at home.

Other survivors include his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George J. TURECEK, Iowa City; maternal grandparents, Joe PONCE, San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Charles RUPLE, Washington; and step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe CONRAD, Keota.

The boy was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church.

Thomas Lee HAMMES

Thomas Lee HAMMES was born May 20, 1959, in Fairfield, the son of John Marvin and Anna Ruth CONRAD HAMMES. He attended fifth grade at Pence School.

Survivors include his parents and the following sister and six brothers: Diane, Gary, Jerome, Bill, Terry, Tony and Ronald, all at home.

Also his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe CONRAD, Keota. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
