James M. HAMMER, former well-known Fairfield business man, passed away this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. HAMMER had been making his home with his son, Averill HAMMER, in Ames (note: in Story Co., IA).
Mr. HAMMER was for many years connected with the Roth Dry Goods store in Fairfield. The body will be brought from Ames to the Murray Funeral Home tonight.

Funeral services for James M. HAMMER, well known former Fairfield business man, will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Murray Funeral Home, in charge of Rev. S. P. Williamson. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

James Milton HAMMER was born in Wrightsville, Penna., Dec. 9, 1853 son of Samuel HAMMER (1811-1864) and Elizabeth HEPPENSTALL HAMMER (1825-1909). He died at the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames, Iowa 2:00 p.m. Oct. 4, 1938. He had suffered a heart attack March 11 and was ill at the home of his son, Averill J. HAMMER until a few days before his death when he was taken to the hospital.
Mr. HAMMER was married Aug. 18, 1887 to Fannie P. AVERILL who preceded him in death August 23 (sic - 28th), 1926. One son, Averill J. HAMMER, now an instructor at Iowa State college was born to them.
Three sisters preceded him in death: Louisa HAMMER 1849, Samantha HAMMER KELLER 1932, and Margaret KERR ROTH 1930. He is survived by two sisters who are now living at Selinsgrove, Penn.; Miss Jennie KERR and Mrs. W. P. SCHARF.
Mr. HAMMER came to Fairfield about 1880 where he was employed as a clerk in the dry goods firm of J. E. Roth and Company. In 1883 he bought stock in the firm and about 1910, when the firm was sold by J. E. Roth, he became a partner with O. E. Kirby and the late M. W. Roth. This firm continued under the name of Roth and Company until 1926 when it was sold.
He was initiated into the Chihuahua Lodge No. 317 I. O. O. F. at Wrightsville, Penna. on Jan. 8, 1875 and was active in this lodge until coming to Fairfield. He withdrew from this lodge in 1886 and became active in the Fairfield lodge. At the time of his death he was a member of Jefferson Lodge No. 4.
He was a member of the Congregational church.
Mr. HAMMER had always been interested in out door life and spent many pleasant hours hunting and fishing in Jefferson county. He was one of the first members of the Isaac Walton League and was prominent in wild life conservation work.
